Report on Conservation of Puffin Books

Condition when received. New and unused books were supplied. Text paper newsprint composed mainly of unrefined mechanical woodpulp giving a pH reading of 5.2 Adhesive bound with hot­ melt adhesive drawn-on paper covers.

  1. Transfer of Printed Image to Archive Long-life Text Paper

Cover removed and adhesive layer cut from spine to release leaves. Individual pages copied by zerox onto Archive Long-life Text 85 g/m2 supplied by P.F.Bingham Ltd.

Rebound to original format. Drawn-on cover Archive Text 120 g/m2 with original covers re-attached. Adhesive used polyvinyl acetate.

2. De-acidification and Lamination of Original Text Pages

Covers removed and adhesive layer cut from spine to release leaves. Text pages de-acidified with a solution of 2g/1 magnesium bicarbonate and then air-dried to give a pH reading of 7.2.

Each leaf was guarded with Inveresk Mould-made repair paper before lamination with heat-set Lamatec coated Compton Tissue

for 45 seconds at 85°C. Tissue supplied by AdemcO Limited.

Rebound to original format. Drawn-on cover Archive Text 120 g/m2 with original covers re-attached. Adhesive used polyvinyl acetate.
